How it started – more space but need storage

As an interior designer, I often find myself facing the challenge of transforming spaces that are in dire need of a makeover. The frequent issue is ‘more space but need storage’.

Recently, I had the privilege of working on a lounge that belonged to a musician who had lots of things they needed to store. The lounge was cluttered, lacking energy flow, and bursting with belongings. The client yearned for a relaxed and creative space to jam with friends and wanted to get his lounge more spacious for guests. I eagerly accepted the challenge and set out to breathe new life into this once chaotic room.

Here are the before photos the client sent me and you can see I had lots of improvements to make.

Where to get started?

My first step in any interior design project is to create a vision. For this lounge, I envisioned a space that exuded warmth and creativity. I wanted to strike a balance between tranquility and the vibrant energy that music brings.

To achieve this, I carefully curated a colour palette and moodboard that would set a natural tone for the entire project.

Colour is so important to create space!

This lounge brief was to be more spacious and that meant including lighter colours that complimented the deeper accent shades. One of my key recommendations was the paint colour ‘Just Walnut’ by the esteemed brand Dulux. I chose this earthy tone as the perfect backdrop for the transformation that was about to take place.  Lighter shades of earthy tones keep rooms feeling light and spacious. Links to perfect paint colours are included in the Deluxe and Ultimate package.

Next, I chose accent hues such as burnt orange, rich green and calming greys. Don’t forget, if you love inspiring colour palettes, be sure to follow me on Instagram for more colour advice.

Furniture makes a different to space

Second, I created a mood board that added storage to the walls horizontally instead of the vertical column bookcases. This instantly opens up space, especially in a lounge where you are already juggling large items like sofas! I selected a suitable sized grey sofa as the centre piece, providing comfort and versatility.

To add character and depth to the space, I incorporated accent cushions in various shades. This keeps the room feeling spacious if these are at lower levels.

I added links to dual purpose furniture that was practical and helped the storage dilemma. A great example is a simple switch from a basic coffee table to one with storage options to tidy away clutter before guests arrive.

When it came to furniture, I carefully considered dimensions to ensure a functional layout. Attention to detail extended to the choice of light fittings, carefully selected to match the aesthetic and enhance the overall ambiance of the room marrying fire and wood Feng shui elements.

Bringing the Outdoors In

Equally, no lounge is complete without a touch of nature and plants can create the illusion of the outdoors and being spacious Given the lounge’s limited natural light, I recommended plants that thrive in shade, adding a touch of greenery and freshness to the space.

These plants not only improve air quality but also contribute to the overall sense of well-being.

Artistic Expression

Furthermore, as an artist often finds inspiration in their surroundings, I curated artwork with a musical theme. These pieces help to create depth to the room which ensures the musician client found constant inspiration in their new spacious surroundings.

Giving items room to breathe is also a top tip for spacious living. Storing guitars in a. dedicated corner and adding books in groups will instantly transform the overall look of the room.

Versatility is Key

Finally, understanding that the client desired flexibility in the use of the space, I presented two options for furniture layout in the 3D render interior design. Be sure to give yourself options when optimising a room to be more spacious.

The first was an accent chair, perfect for intimate jam sessions or solo relaxation. The mid century modern style with thinner legs, lifted off the floor creates the illusion of a more spacious lounge.

The second option, ideal for entertaining more guests or indulging in creative brainstorming sessions included a dining table. Choosing round tables helps a more spacious feel and also adds organic shapes that balance the space.

Finally, the heart of this design was to strike a balance between the principles of Feng Shui ensuring creativity and relaxation. Do not forget colour choices, furnishings, and layout played a part in this spacious lounge. They were all carefully considered to promote harmony and positive energy.

Spacious Living Tips

I think this transformation of this musician’s lounge is truly remarkable. It evolved from a cluttered to spacious and embodied a harmonious and creative vibe. I love the soothing, natural colour tones, warm accents and unique pattern pieces. Keep in mind solid colours for walls and sofas works miracles in small spaces.

My client was overjoyed with the final result. The lounge now provides the perfect backdrop for musical collaborations and artistic expression.  In interior design, every project creates a beautiful space to solve a problem.

This project is a perfect example of how to make a lounge more spacious. It serves as a reminder that with the right choices, you can create a lounge that’s more spacious without a compromise in creativity and relaxation.
